ABS Vacuum Formed Housing for Desktop Herbal Steam Therapy Equipment

Introduction

A desktop herbal steam and therapy device needs a housing that protects heaters and controls while remaining easy to use and clean. For this small-batch project, Hubei Zhongrongda Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. produced a white, matte ABS upper shell measuring 300 x 280 x 250 mm. The sloped one-piece enclosure includes five recessed circular wells for therapy probes, side ventilation and interface windows, and internal mounting bosses for the control board. The project has now entered mass production.

Customer Requirements

The customer specified a sloped, integrated shell with rounded transitions and a clean medical-equipment appearance. Five recessed circular wells had to accept treatment handles without sticking or interference. Side fan grilles had to provide reliable airflow, while interface windows had to register with external connectors. Internal bosses needed to align with the lower frame and PCB mounting holes. The final surface was pure white, matte, smooth, and suitable for optional brand-logo printing.

Manufacturing Challenges

The five circular recesses combine visible appearance with functional fit: diameter, depth, roundness, and spacing all affect probe placement. Vacuum forming can introduce wall-thickness variation and corner distortion, so the forming strategy and trimming datums had to be controlled. Vent grilles and side windows required clean, burr-free edges. Sloped faces also reveal sanding or cutter marks, and boss locations had to remain accurate after shell forming.

Our Engineering Solution

We reviewed the 3D model and established a common datum scheme for the top wells, side openings, lower-frame interface, and internal bosses. The ABS sheet was vacuum formed over a dedicated mold with controlled heating and draw conditions. CNC trimming then established the perimeter and critical openings. Custom fixtures located the five wells and verified ±0.2 mm dimensions, while secondary machining and inserts produced stable screw-boss locations. Progressive sanding, ABS-compatible primer, and matte baking paint removed tool marks and produced the requested finish.

Manufacturing Process

  1. Vacuum form ABS sheet over the approved mold.
  2. CNC trim the outer profile and establish reference datums.
  3. Machine the five circular probe wells, ventilation grilles, and side interface windows.
  4. Form and machine internal screw bosses and mounting holes.
  5. Deburr, sand, and blend sloped faces and radiused corners.
  6. Apply ABS primer and white matte baking paint; print logo when specified.
  7. Inspect dimensions, fit, airflow openings, appearance, and assembly alignment.
  8. Pack approved shells for production shipment.

Quality Control and Final Results

Calipers, CMM or fixture gauges, depth gauges, and go/no-go templates are used for dimensional verification. First-article checks focus on the five wells at ±0.2 mm, recess depth, center spacing, vent and window registration, perimeter fit, and screw-boss alignment. Visual inspection checks matte uniformity, color, burrs, sink or distortion, scratches, and sanding marks. Functional assembly confirms smooth probe insertion, fan alignment, connector access, and accurate attachment to the lower frame. The approved housing is now in mass production.

FAQ

Can ABS vacuum forming achieve tight probe-hole tolerances?

Yes. Forming is followed by CNC machining and fixture inspection; critical well dimensions can be controlled to ±0.2 mm.

Can you match the sloped medical-device appearance?

Yes. Mold geometry, CNC trimming, sanding, and controlled painting are based on the approved 3D data.

How are ventilation grilles finished?

Grilles are CNC cut and deburred, then checked for clean edges, burr-free openings, and fan alignment.

Can internal bosses be included?

Yes. Bosses and mounting holes are machined with dedicated datums to align with the PCB and lower frame.

Can you add a logo?

Yes. Logo printing can be added after the matte paint is approved.

Do you support small batches?

Yes. Prototypes, small batches, and repeat mass production are supported.

What files are needed for quotation?

Please send 2D/3D drawings, ABS grade, finish and color target, quantity, tolerance table, and inspection requirements.
